Vulcan is the iconic symbol of Birmingham, Alabama — a colossal 56-foot tall statue of the Roman god of fire and forge, and the largest cast-iron statue in the world. Designed by Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti and cast from locally produced iron for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, Vulcan was intended to showcase Birmingham’s iron and steel industrial roots. Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, Alabama, is a preserved iron-making blast furnace complex that operated from 1882 until 1971 and played a central role in the city’s rise as an industrial powerhouse. Founded by Colonel James Withers Sloss to take advantage of the region’s rich iron-ore, coal, and limestone resources, the site produced pig iron for nearly a century and helped shape the economic growth of Birmingham and the broader “Magic City.” After iron production ceased, the complex was saved from demolition, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1981, and transformed into a museum and cultural center where visitors can explore industrial history, attend community events, and learn about the labor and technology that powered the iron industry.
